Use your body-talk skillfully

October 12, 2009

I was reading my niece’s Cleo magazine yesterday and there was this aritcle on body language which i find useful for job interviews. Here’s the gist.

95% of communication is non-verbal. Thus, having a timid or too strong a body language  may hinder a candidate from getting the job. The right way is  to present yourself with a confident body language. Something that a leader would posses. Present yourself large and strong but with a relaxed posture.  Eye contact is also important. Look directly at the interviewer but don’t stare. 5-7 seconds is maximum for meeting the eyes. For females, portay an assertive image. Do not slouch. Stand proud. And when you are seated, place your hand on the chair’s armrest and not on your lap. This will give you a strong body structure. To project confidence when talking, keep your arms loosely at your sides and use fluid gestures for emphasis. And for the  perfect handshake, extend your best hand, hold your fingers and thumb vertically, extend them directly, clasp well and release. Remember you are not trying to break your interviewer’s bones.
